Elon Musk's Latest Tweet Fuels Bitcoin Creator Identity Mystery Editors News
  • Bitcoin may have been created by more than one individual using the pseudonym.
  • Szabo first proposed the concept of Bit Gold, a decentralized digital currency, in 1998.

Elon Musk is known for posting sensational tweets on cryptocurrency and has a considerable following. So it wasn’t long ago that his followers started to figure out the secret message encoded in a tweet that had the logos of five different tech businesses and included a few letters from each of their names.

Elon Musk’s oblique reference to the mysterious founder of bitcoin has created a flurry of discussion on the internet. A picture of the logos of Samsung, Toshiba, Nakamichi, and Motorola with the initial letters of each of their names circled was tweeted by Tesla CEO Elon Musk on Wednesday, revealing how the pseudonym “Satoshi Nakamoto” was likely generated.

Mystery Unsolved

Since the cryptocurrency’s inception, the name of its creator has never been known. Bitcoin may have been created by more than one individual using the pseudonym. Cryptocurrency enthusiasts are unconvinced of Australian computer scientist Craig Wright’s claim to be Satoshi Nakamoto.

Around a dozen other people have been named probable Satoshi Nakamoto impersonators, including Elon Musk, who has had his message retweeted approximately 63,000 times. While speaking to podcaster Lex Fridman in December, Musk said he thought computer scientist Nick Szabo was the author of a 2008 white paper outlining the digital currency. Szabo first proposed the concept of Bit Gold, a decentralized digital currency, in 1998.

His denials of being Satoshi Nakamoto, however, are well-documented. “I’m afraid you got it wrong doxing me as Satoshi, but I’m used to it,” Szabo said in an email to financial author Dominic Frisby in 2014. According to popular belief, Bitcoin’s creator started work on it in 2007. However, as far as his identity is concerned, he claimed to be a 37-year-old Japanese man with no personal information.
