After a few months of testing, the Kenyan government intends to implement its digital identity system in December 2023. The Kenyan president, William Ruto, was quoted on October 30 by local media for his remarks made at the East Africa Device Assembly Kenya factory in Athi River.

Citizens of Kenya will be issued permanent identity numbers along with Maisha Namba at the time of registration, which will be made available digitally. The unified ID system will facilitate the digitization of government records, allowing for timelier public access to services in the areas of education, healthcare, and government.

Addressing Kenya Pain Points

In September, Immigration and Citizenship Services Principal Secretary Julius Bitok advocated for private enterprises to embrace digital ID systems because they offer novel solutions like mobile banking and agent networks, which in turn revolutionize e-commerce procedures. Also, he informed that government authorities were working on a digital ID that would make doing business much simpler.

The Central Bank of Kenya expressed pessimism in June 2023 over the necessity to deploy a central bank digital currency in the immediate to medium term, given that other inventive solutions surrounding the current ecosystem were able to address Kenya’s “pain points” in payments.

Kenya’s information technology authority was asked by a parliamentary committee on Monday to halt the Worldcoin cryptocurrency project led by Sam Altman in the nation until stricter restrictions could be put in place.

A new “identity and financial network” was going to be created via scanning individuals’ irises in return for a digital ID, but the government put a stop to it in early August due to privacy concerns.
