FTX Reportedly Planning To Sell Stake in OpenAI Competitor Anthropic

According to Semafor, FTX is considering selling its interest in OpenAI competitor Anthropic. According to reports from November 2022, the cryptocurrency exchange now owns over $500 million worth of shares in Anthropic.

Semafor reports that the bank that might be selling the shares is Perella Weinberg, and that the bank has been pitching the concept to investors. The Financial Times revealed a spreadsheet that included information on a $43 million investment by FTX in Twitter. Artificial intelligence, and more especially generative AI, has taken the globe by storm. With the release of OpenAI’s ChatGPT in November.

Banking on AI Boom

Microsoft and Google, two corporate behemoths, have spent billions to make the technology widely available. OpenAI and the incorporation of ChatGPT into Microsoft’s Bing web browser are said to have cost the company $13 billion in investments.

After getting a $400 million investment from Google earlier this year. Anthropic, founded in 2021 by former OpenAI personnel, unveiled Claude AI in March.

Anthropic, headed by Spark Capital, successfully received $450 million in Series C fundraising in May. In the same month, Anthropic said that it had improved Claude AI to the point that the chatbot could understand more than 100,000 tokens, or around 75,000 words.

In November, FTX sought bankruptcy protection under Chapter 11. A month later, FTX co-founder and ex-CEO Sam Bankman-Fried was arrested on allegations of wire fraud, money laundering, and conspiracy.
