Soneium, the blockchain of Sony has officially launched its first music NFT collection, integrating blockchain technology with the music industry. The debut collection was developed in partnership with Coop Records, an on-chain record label, revolutionizing music monetization and distribution.
Coop Records has helped the transition of over 600 songs to blockchain, with the vision of creating a more equitable model of revenue-sharing between artists, streaming services, and record labels.
Notably, it is hosted on Sonova, a dedicated NFT marketplace. The collection can be minted at 0.000777 ETH until the end of the month. There have been more than 644 copies of this NFT minted so far with the total supply being 999,999.
Moreover, the NFT collection of Sony features a 22-minute-long unreleased track by Tokyo-based producer NUU$HI. This release marks the beginning of a planned series of NFT drops on Sonova. It also positions the blockchain of Sony, Soneium as a platform for exclusive blockchain-based music content.
As of its launch on the mainnet in January 2025, Soneium by Sony built on Ethereum Layer 2 has grown abruptly, with over 245,000 active accounts. The project began with a four-month testnet phase in August 2024, at which time it had reached more than 14 million user accounts and processed 47 million transactions.
Sony has not declared its intentions to integrate Soneium into a broader entertainment or music business at this point. With the NUU$HI as part of planned NFT releases, it cannot be known whether Sony will expand into the blockchain for the distribution of music.
