The decentralized finance (DeFi) platform formerly MakerDAO, now branded as Sky, is planning a return to its original name following community pushback over the rebranding. The co-founder of Sky, Rune Christensen has commenced a proposal to readdress the rebranding decision.
Since the rebrand in August 2024 as part of the Endgame plan, the platform has witnessed negative feedback and confusion from users, raising concerns about the Sky brand’s protocol and tokenomics. Moreover, users have cited the brand’s lack of clarity and association with the platform’s core identity.
Meanwhile, the rebranding solely focused on introducing innovative features and tokens under the Sky name. However, Maker users have strong loyalty which they connect with stability and security.
Three Options for the Community
Rune has proposed three options to address the concern of rebranding. The first option is to continue with Sky as the core brand to further capitalize on its recent successes.
The recentering of the Maker Brand with its original brand identity is the second option. Reintroducing the Maker is the prime focus, reinstating MKR as the only governance token of the DAO.
The final option suggested by Rune is to recenter the brand, Maker with a refreshed brand identity. While bringing Maker back to center stage with a refreshed identity keeps the classic look, but makes modifications to align it with USDS and the StarDAOs.
Furthermore, he plans to make space for community feedback through a community call scheduled this Friday, October 25. They likely incorporate the ideas as an Atlas Edit and that can be voted from October 28. If approved, a governance poll on November 4 is to be followed to determine the future direction of the Maker brand and tokenomics.
