A rising number of Shanghai citizens turn to NFTs to vent their anger after a series of covid-19 restrictions. The non-fungible tokens’ key selling point is that they cannot be removed since the government works around the clock to suppress any online information that expresses the dissatisfaction of its population with the current state of affairs.

After a recent coronavirus epidemic, Shanghai’s 26 million citizens have been confined to their houses since April 5, unable to obtain food and medication. Others have been forced to vacate their homes to disinfect them. Government attempts to suppress internet and group chat complaints have also increased, with recordings and images of lockdown limitations being removed.

NFT to the Rescue

In response to the continuous limitations, some people of Shanghai have resorted to NFTs, generating hundreds of movies, images, and artwork depicting the restrictions in a manner that the government cannot control, as Reuters writes. It is irretrievable when an NFT is coined or uploaded to the blockchain, unlike online material posted through Twitter.

Users have been able to purchase and sell content with crypto via NFT marketplaces like OpenSea. There’s a famous six-minute movie here called ‘Voices of April,’ which recounts the hardships that citizens of Shanghai have been through since the city was placed under government lockdown in April. In April, the administration started wiping its digital footprint on every social media network. However, by Monday, 786 items relating to the video were discovered on OpenSea. As many as 454 fatalities have been attributed to the coronavirus in China’s recent epidemic.
