Reddit Follows Twitters Footsteps, Plans NFT as Profile Picture for Users NFT News
  • Reddit hasn’t determined exactly how it will enable NFTs just yet.
  • There was a wide range of opinions about CryptoSnoos.

Reddit is testing a new feature that will allow users to use any NFT they possess, not only the Ethereum-based “CryptoSnoos” the site released last year in minimal numbers regarding profile pictures. Recently Twitter announced a similar feature allowing users to upload their NFT in place of regular profile pictures.

When clicked, the photos display information on the NFT. They appear as hexagon-shaped images. Reddit hasn’t determined exactly how it will enable NFTs just yet. According to reports, Reddit explained this particular NFT test is in very early stages and hasn’t been made available to public users on the site.

Reddit spokesperson Tim Rathschmidt said:

“We’re always exploring ways to provide value for users and communities on Reddit. At the moment we’re testing the ability to use NFTs as profile pictures (avatars) and verify ownership.”

Reddit has been experimenting with different NFT-related efforts for some time and has set up a separate page for NFT-related activity at nft.reddit.com. For the time being, Reddit’s own digital collectibles, the CryptoSnoos, are the main emphasis of the website.

Reddit’s alien mascot, dubbed “Snoo,” is the inspiration for the “Snoo” portion of the name, and the collectibles themselves are based on Snoo’s design. In one case, the mascot is shown in the form of a helium balloon. Only four units of the CryptoSnoo have been made available so far.

There was a wide range of opinions about CryptoSnoos. In the announcement post’s comments section, several Redditors referred to Reddit’s move into NFTs as “idiotic,” “a gimmick,” or worse. The high cost of NFTs was a more significant issue for some individuals since it prevented them from participating in the ecosystem. Some had shown greater interest or even support for Reddit’s efforts in this area.
