Over 3 Billion Terra LUNC Burned by Binance Exchange

Binance Adds TerraClassicUSD (USTC) as Borrowable Asset Exchange News
  • Binance has burned over 3 billion LUNC, worth around $1 million.
  • Notably, the first trading fee burning amounted to around 5.5 billion LUNC.

Today, a LUNC community validator named LUNC DAO tweeted that the largest cryptocurrency exchange in the world, Binance, has burned over 3 billion LUNC worth $1 million, to the Terra burn wallet as part of its commitment to support the Terra network.

It’s worth noting that the transaction was first reported by LunaBurnTracker, a Twitter account that keeps tabs on LUNC burning. Moreover, the burn event monitoring blog post on Binance’s website has not been updated to reflect this transaction. However, the update should have gone live at Tuesday midnight UTC.

Binance Dominates the Burn Activity

In response to calls from the LUNC community for a 1.2% tax to be placed on off-chain transactions, Binance announced on September 26 that it would be burning any fees collected from LUNC trading activity. In the event that additional exchanges do not join in within 4 weeks, the initiative is expected to be scrapped.

Notably, the first trading fee burn amounted to around 5.5 billion LUNC. Binance has already burned over 8.5 billion LUNC in trading fees, including today’s burn. The price tag for the exchange is $2.8 million.

About 17.9 billion LUNC have been burned since the LUNC community first started conducting burns. Over 47% of that sum is now being eaten away by Binance’s trading fees. Only roughly 5 billion LUNC, or about 28% of the total, have been burnt by the 1.2% burn tax on on-chain transactions. Over the last 24 hours, the price of Terra Classic (LUNC) has increased by more than 5%.
