Optimism’s Testnet Patched After Discovering Critical Vulnerabilities

Optimism's Testnet Patched After Discovering Critical Vulnerabilities Blockchain News
  • Optimism upgraded its testnet on April 25, according to Offchain Labs.
  • Offchain Labs, Optimism’s rival, noted that these are challenging difficulties.

At least two weeks after discovering them, the Layer 2 network Optimism patched two serious vulnerabilities on its testnet. Optimism upgraded its testnet on April 25, according to Offchain Labs, who discovered the vulnerabilities on Friday. A software company warned that malicious actors might change the chain’s history and perform other “subtle attacks” because of the since-fixed security weaknesses.

Optimism was notified by Offchain Labs on March 22 of two testnet issues: first, that the OP Stack fraud-proof mechanism might be tricked into accepting a false chain history; and second, that an exploiter may be able to prevent it from accepting a valid chain history.

Challenging Difficulties

Offchain Labs, Optimism’s rival, noted in the statement that these are challenging difficulties. Protocols that are immune to fraud, as well as the temporal considerations involved in doing so, are “very difficult” to create.

As a measure to prevent such attacks in the future, Optimism added timer-handling code after the report. The goal of the upgrade is to make its networks even more secure and to stop assaults like censorship and traitor attacks from succeeding.

Based on developer activity and 7-day net flows, optimism has surpassed all other protocols after Ethereum’s Dencun update. The platform has only been live for around two years when this change takes place. It has dethroned long-established industry leaders like Polkadot and Cardano.

Moreover, while total-value-locked (TVL) maintains a steady and healthy rise, the number of core devs and Github contributions has recently started to surge, according to DefiLlama.
