El Salvador Currencies

The Central American country is quite popular among people who are acquainted with cryptocurrency. El Salvador was the first country to officially declare Bitcoin as their legal currency in the year 2021.

Early citizens of the country started making transactions using cacao seeds and during the Spanish colonization, the coins macacaos from Spain were put into use. Silver coins and coffee beans still play a major role in the country’s economy.

From 1892 to 2001, the country utilized the currency with the name colon, which had the symbol “₡”. The complete dollarization of the currency was made post-2001. Till Jan 2001, one USD was valued to be 8.75 colons. After that, every financial transaction in the country was made via the USD.

El Salvador adopted BTC during the second quarter of 2021, which was supposedly the golden era of cryptocurrency. Crypto had a massive rise hitting the $1 trillion market capitalization. Compared to the year 2020, the increase in terms of market cap was 67.35%.

The BTC also attained the All Time High (ATH) of $68,789.63 on 10th November 2021. The current price of BTC is above $18K, almost $50K below its ATH.
