The Carbon Removal cause will be launched on July 20, 2022, by EarthFund. Dr. Lucy Tweed, who founded the organization, will focus on discovering and supporting community-led carbon removal initiatives to help combat climate change and remove carbon from the atmosphere. The Carbon Removal Cause aims to sponsor nature-based activities on the ground that aid in the removal of carbon and benefit local people.
These options are long-term answers, but they’re still years away from being ready to implement. Now that nature-based solutions are accessible, we can maintain and restore carbon-rich ecosystems in order to support natural processes and increase CO2 uptake (forests, peatlands, salt marshes, mangroves, and seagrass beds).
Natural carbon removal is gradually losing its focus on climate change in favor of positive PR. Massive corporations swarm in, push land grabs, limit local communities access to essential resources, and promote tree-planting initiatives that are ill-suited to the region’s ecosystem and ignore its residents’ concerns.
Founded by Dr. Lucy Tweed, an associate climate researcher at Cambridge University, the Carbon Removal DAO aims to “support communities around the world to reclaim sovereignty of their land by funding nature-based carbon removal projects that put local livelihoods and environmental justice front and center.”
Using the Carbon Removal DAO, a worldwide community can locate initiatives, accept crypto contributions, and vote on which carbon-removing projects throughout the globe get the cash they need to make a difference.
Comments from Dr. Lucy Tweed on the cause of Carbon Removal:
“Individual action is crucially important. Recycling, flying less, voting for progressive candidates, eating less meat… are all great. But to accelerate climate action we need to come together to create scalable models for broader systemic change. This is no secret.
The problem is that there hasn’t been a tool for collective, meaningful, and coordinated global action until now. The Carbon Removal cause is an accessible and inclusive community where people can come together as a collective to support sustainable community-led carbon removal projects and bring about real change.”
Adam Boalt, CEO of EarthFund, adds:
“We’re all incredibly excited for Dr Tweed to be launching her cause on our platform. Not only is she going to be conducting research into carbon storage at Cambridge University, but through her cause on the EarthFund platform, she’s also going to be growing a global community that gets rewarded for being the driving force behind finding and funding carbon removal projects around the world.
This is what we built EarthFund for — to give ordinary people the tools they need to bring about real change on a global scale. We can’t wait to see what the Carbon Removal DAO achieves.”
The Carbon Removal DAO will support a wide range of efforts to combat climate change, including safeguarding carbon-rich habitats, repairing ecosystems, regenerative agriculture, and testing innovative techniques for carbon removal. Every initiative will be community-centered to ensure that climate action does not jeopardize local livelihoods.
The CarbonCommons tokens will be distributed to EarthFund members on July 27. A decentralized exchange or other trading platforms will not offer the coin; however, it may be traded for 1Earth on the EarthFund platform.
In addition to voting on projects and ideas, CarbonCommons token holders will be rewarded in USDT for their contribution. They will also be able to participate in a private Discord channel with Dr. Lucy Tweed and other climate activists, scientists, and advocates.
